Barbs qualified as a physiotherapist in 2000 and has expertise in musculoskeletal physiotherapy, neurological rehabilitation, paediatric, and geriatric care.
In 2018, Barbs was working in the rehabilitation department of a private hospital, frustrated that there seemed to be limited community services for post discharge patient referrals. This led to the establishment of a private clinic, which has since expanded into The Park. Drawing on accumulated knowledge and years of experience, Barbs developed a tailored program addressing various physical symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease.
Working closely with patients and their partners/spouses really highlighted that living with Parkinson’s Disease not only affects the patient but also ripples through families and communities. Focusing on the person with Parkinson’s was not enough, there needed to be a more holistic approach to managing the impact Parkinson’s has on immediate family members.
In 2023, Barbs achieved the distinction of becoming one of the AMP Foundation Tomorrow Makers (https://www.ampstomorrowfund.com.au/), marking a pivotal moment in the transformation of the clinic into a social enterprise, a for profit, for-purpose business. With the support of Impact Boom and the AMP Foundation, Barbs and Rory refined their mission, providing a unique opportunity to significantly impact the Parkinson’s community.
