The Parkinson’s Centre® has officially opened its doors on the Sunshine Coast, with more than 200 people from across Queensland’s Parkinson’s community and health sector attending a heartwarming and inspiring launch event.
The purpose-built allied health hub was formally opened by Mayor Rosanna Natoli, who praised the Centre as a “groundbreaking step in local, community-led care for people living with Parkinson’s.”
The event brought together people with Parkinson’s, carers, and leading professionals from across the health and aged care landscape, including representatives from numerous home care providers, general practices, and local councils. Notable attendees included Mayor Rosanna Natoli, Andrew Powell MP, Councillors Terry Landsberg and Joe Natoli, Cheryl Harris AOM, President of Healthy Ageing Partnerships, Ryan Gee (Nurse Navigator – Neurology, Sunshine Coast) and Gary McKitterick (Shake It Up).
Messages of support were also received from high-profile advocates and supporters including Liz Cantor (Channel Ten presenter), Michael Gorton AOM (Chair, Alfred Health), and Andrew Wallace MP, all recognising the significance of this Centre to the region and the broader Parkinson’s community.
Co-founders Barbara and Rory Cullinan described their vision to establish a welcoming and supportive environment, where people with Parkinson’s and their carers can access professional services and feel valued as part of the community.
The evening also marked the official launch of the Parkinson’s Support Fund™, a new initiative that will provide financial assistance for people with Parkinson’s who cannot afford essential therapies, equipment, or respite care due to funding delays or personal hardship.
With over 18,500 Queenslanders living with Parkinson’s — a figure set to double by 2040 — the Centre’s opening marks a major milestone in access to long-term, person-centred support.
